Welcome to the first edition of Safer • Steadier • Stronger. Most people know me as a family medicine physician. For nearly two decades, prevention has been at the heart of everything I do. Now, through ReadyRoom and Caregiving Is Healthcare, I'm bringing that same prevention-first mindset into your home. |
It's Time to Rethink Prevention: For Our Brains and Beyond
The Case for Prevention—Especially for Brain Health
In our healthcare system, we're trained to respond when something goes wrong. But I believe deeply that evidence-based prevention deserves just as much attention.
At a recent workshop on Brain Health led by Drs. Malaz Boustani and Charles Vega, one statistic stood out:
Up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide are linked to 14 modifiable risk factors.
— Lancet Commission 2024 Volume 404, Issue 10452
That means nearly half of dementia cases could potentially be delayed—or even prevented—with earlier, coordinated action.
But here's what they didn't say at that workshop—and what I see constantly as both a physician and a caregiver: the same factors that protect your brain may also protect you from falls.
The Three Pillars: Your Foundation for Prevention
🏠 Safer Homes
Your environment shapes your health. A well-assessed home removes fall hazards before they cause injury, supports independence, and reduces the anxiety that comes with navigating unsafe spaces.
🧠 Steadier Lives
Brain health and fall prevention are inseparable. The same lifestyle factors that protect cognitive function—quality sleep, physical activity, sensory health, social connection—also keep you steady on your feet.
💪 Stronger Years
Movement preserves both brain and body. But movement requires a safe space to happen. When your home supports mobility, you're more likely to stay active, maintain muscle strength, and preserve the balance that prevents falls.
Start Here: Three Actions You Can Take Today
Whether you're a caregiver, planning ahead for yourself, or supporting someone you love:
1. | Check the lighting. Poor visibility is one of the most overlooked fall risks—and one of the easiest to fix. |
2. | Clear the pathways. Walk through your home as if you're unsteady. What would you hold onto? What could trip you? |
3. | Schedule a hearing or vision screening. When the brain has to work harder to hear or see, it has fewer resources left to focus on balance. |
Let’s act early, think ahead, and create environments that support the lives we want to live and not just the emergencies we want to avoid.
Stay safer, steadier, and stronger.
